For many of us, losing an ID is rarely more than a simple inconvenience and a trip to the DOT. However, for people experiencing homelessness, this is far from their reality. For people experiencing homelessness there are a plethora of barriers that prevent them from maintaining an ID. People often need to carry all of their items with them when they do not have stable housing or risk theft, including theft of their important documents. These documents often become exposed to the elements when it rains or snows or may become otherwise damaged in someone’s bag. When someone is in crisis mode, they may not see the importance of these documents and not prioritize keeping them secure.
As a result, they are faced with a whole new set of problems, like not being able to attain a job or secure housing. This is why having access to a state-issued ID is essential for those experiencing homelessness.
Those without an ID are faced with an abundance of different problems. For example, not having an ID prevents anyone from being able to get a stable job, as employers are legally required to verify identity. Because of this, most will not hire someone without valid documents. This locks people out of work and any chance of earning a stable income.
In order to get an ID, there are a variety of ways. A convenient method would be to visit an Iowa Department of Transportation driver’s license or service center. Locations and hours are listed at this website: https://iowadot.gov/. The cost is $10 for a replacement ID which can be an additional barrier for people experiencing homelessness. It is required to bring proof of identification. This can be in the form of a certified birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, or one’s most recent U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services immigration or refugee document.
If one does not have possession of one of the necessary documents to get an ID, it can be a lengthy process to get replacements. To get a birth certificate, one can request a replacement from the vital records office in the state where they were born. For people born in Iowa specifically, they can order one from the Iowa Department of Public Health, which costs $15. For those who do not have a Social Security card, they can get a replacement for free from the Social Security Administration (SSA), either in person or online.
Once one gets an ID, it is crucial to keep it in good condition and not lose it. To do this, it is important to keep it inside a waterproof bag to protect it from the outside weather. One should also keep it on their body and not in a bag to keep it from getting stolen easily. Finally, if possible, one should photocopy their ID just in case they lose it. Many case managers will keep these copies in a client’s file to have a backup available.
Getting an ID can be life-changing, as it opens many doors otherwise inaccessible. It is paramount to have while experiencing homelessness. It is okay to ask for help because nobody should have to navigate the system by themselves. Everyone deserves the chance to reclaim their identity and rebuild their life.
