After nearly 20 years at Willis Dady Homeless Services, Shelter Services Director Denine Rushing has accepted a new position and will be moving to Minnesota at the end of July. Wednesday, July 23rd, was her last day at Willis Dady. Staff, volunteers, and board members celebrated her final day with a party at Pickle Palace.
Denine started her time with Willis Dady as a Resident Assistant before moving into various roles such as Volunteer Coordinator, SSVF Case Manager (Veteran Program), Shelter Manager, and Shelter Services Director. Over the last year she’s also been overseeing the Street Outreach Program to support people experiencing literal homelessness.
Denine’s favorite part of working at Willis Dady “has been working with the clients and being a positive support throughout their journey. It's been an honor to witness the transformation that happens for so many clients as they work towards stability.”
She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and hard work not only at Willis Dady but in the greater Cedar Rapids community. Executive Director Alicia shared, "Denine is someone who knows no strangers, cares deeply about the human condition, and is driven to address inequities in her community. While we are deeply saddened to see Denine leave Willis Dady, we know the legacy she leaves behind will be with us through the perspectives and skill she has instilled in her team and the entire staff. Denine is someone who is passionate about a wide range of things and always transforms her energy into tangible results. I know she will find great success on her next journey.”
“It's been a wonderful 19 years that I've been able to spend here at Willis Dady. They say it's not working if you love what you do. I have to say I've loved every minute of doing what I love for 19 years of my life! Thanks to everyone I've had the opportunity to work with! I've learned so much from each and every one of you! It's been an honor!” -Denine Rushing
