Development Data & Grants Specialist

Full-time, Exempt


The Development Data & Grants Specialist will join a growing development team to focus on the maintenance and growth of agency grant awards. The Development Data & Grants Specialist will be responsible for grant writing, developing grant reports and creating, monthly department reports of grant activity. The focus on grant programs is year-round and essential to the Willis Dady budget.


The Development Data & Grants Specialist will work closely with agency staff to understand programs and client needs, and will work closely with the Development Director to increase overall grant revenue in line with agency needs. Strong writing skills, attention to detail and organization, consistent follow-through, independent problem solving, ability to support multiple ongoing and new activities and passion for the agency mission will be essential for success in this position. The position is based in Cedar Rapids at the Willis Dady shelter and administrative office. This is a full-time salaried position and is eligible for all agency benefits.



Experience in grant writing is required. Qualified candidates must also have a Bachelor’s degree and some experience working in a professional office setting.  Experience in fundraising, marketing or public relations is preferred.

Responsibilities by Role


Development Team Member

Fund Development

  • Manage and execute agency grant applications and reporting.

  • Write renewal grants and grant reports according to the grant schedules, accommodating for changes in grant schedules as they occur.

  • Work cohesively with agency staff to help design grant applications and to communicate corresponding grant requirements to staff.

  • Identify and secure new grant awards in line with agency programs and needs.

  • Create and maintain relationships with granting/funding contacts to stay appraised of their process and priorities.


Data Collection and Reporting

  • Ensure reporting of grants is submitted correctly and on time, and work closely with the accounting clerk to manage the fund balance on existing grants.

  • Generate routine monthly data reports for Development and annual report for all programs in a timely fashion, ensuring 100% accuracy by correcting any errors.

  • Assist in tracking data for the strategic plan, grant reports and various ongoing indicators, working with a wide range of staff to create a data system that is efficient and effective.


Donor Stewardship

  • Work closely with the Development Coordinator to ensure timely generation and distribution of donor acknowledgements and other grant-related communications.

  • Support the Development Director and the Board Development Committee with planning and activities.


Administrative Excellence

  • Support the Development Director and other staff with various projects and assignments including community committee responsibilities.

  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and trainings as appropriate.

  • Assist with general office duties such as answering phones, receiving visitors and maintaining relationships with agency partners.

  • Contribute to the overall agency mission through miscellaneous duties as assigned.


Willis Dady Staff Member

  • Attend staff meetings and agency events as required.

  • Complete required trainings and adhere to all guidelines, policies and procedures.

  • Maintain ethical client relationships and confidentiality in accordance with policies

  • Step in to assist with services at the Willis Dady shelter if needed (i.e. in a short-term emergency, temporary shortage or weekly short-shift).

  • Undertake special projects as assigned.

  • Support agency volunteers and manage project specific volunteers as appropriate.

  • Other duties as assigned.

This position is full-time and reports to the Development Director. Benefits of full-time employment include health insurance, paid time off and paid holidays. Salary begins at $33,000-36,000 depending on experience and qualifications. Willis Dady is an Equal Opportunity and At-Will Employer.
